Excellence in Community Engagement

The City of Chanhassen has built an impressive system that exceeds national standards in several key areas, but as the City enters its next phase of development, staff wanted to take a comprehensive look at their system and identify guidelines for growing and maintaining the system as the community continues to grow.
Nearly 10% of the community's residents participated in the planning process through online surveys, interactive geomapping engagement applications, open houses, focus group meetings, and leaving input at pop up events. The high level of participation provided the type of support the City's leadership needed to designate maintenance and enhancement of the parks and recreation system as a Key Financial Strategy for the City. This designation means that funding for the system will be one of a handful of key funding priorities for future budgets.
HKGi’s planning process included assessing current conditions within the system, assessing levels of access to community and neighborhood parks, and idenitfying the distribution of facilities and gaps in the trail and open space system. The plan also establishes a new set of guiding principles, which will provide a framework for future decision-making, and establishes methods to measure the success of implementation initiatives.
