Waukee, IA
HKGi led community members in this fast-growing suburb west of Des Moines through a comprehensive planning process to address some of the challenges the city faces as a result of its rapid growth. One of those key issues is the potential for rapid housing growth to squeeze out opportunities to create neighborhood-supporting and regional commercial and employment development. This plan identifies strategies to help preserve land for future commercial and industrial uses.
As an emerging suburb with abundant developable land, this plan will also help Waukee provide greater diversity in housing choices. HKGi worked with the community to update the land use plan to ensure that new development includes high quality parks, trails and open spaces and that transportation corridors efficiently connect people to destinations.
Planning policies also included methods to address surface and storm water management. The planning process also featured concept planning for a civic campus that can potentially serve an expanded municipal operation and provide the community with a substantial new gathering place.
