The Mound Transit Center is an important facet of the downtown revitalization master plan known as Mound Visions. The multi-modal transit hub provides the City with a well-designed park and ride facility for residents and commuters, served by Metro Transit bus routes and future light rail. Additional site amenities include a civic park, pond and water feature, and the provision for a community farmers market. The site is prominently located along County Road 15 and lies adjacent to a future light rail line, offering easy access to public transit. Because of its prominence, the character and materials of the parking garage and site design must contribute to the qualities that Mound Visions establishes for the downtown area while still maintaining its functionality as a transit hub.

To that end, the use of architectural elements and materials recall the City’s relationship to Lake Minnetonka. Pervious pavement systems were incorporated into the pedestrian sidewalks and drive courts to improve permeability and reduce storm water runoff. Sustainable design is a significant aspect of the project. The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District points to this project as a model for sustainable downtown redevelopment. No asphalt pavement is used in order to reduce heat-island effect. All of the drive and parking areas are constructed with pervious pavers to infiltrate rainwater. In addition, several rain gardens and subsurface infiltration beds also treat and infiltrate stormwater.
