HKGi's master plan for Westwood Church’s 57-acre campus honors the natural features of the site by utilizing vegetation, topography and sun orientation as primary forces shaping the design. Visitors to the church are greeted by an expansive prairie landscape, and an integrated indoor/outdoor space reflects the type of design principles usually employed in nature preserves and parks. Wetland/forest preservation and sensitivity to adjacent land uses were also important principles affecting the site's design. HKGi worked closely with the church's neighbors, Camp Tanadoona and the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, to design a distinctive campus woven into the natural and cultural context of its surrounding neighborhood. Strategic timing of improvements will allow for future expansion as the church continues to grow.
