HKGi's landscape architects, in collaboration with the architects at BKV Group, redesigned this civic site to be innovative in its use of space and resources. A green roof atop the parking garage, permeable grass pavers and rain water gardens treat and reduce the amount of storm water runoff. Prairie plantings throughout the site reduce costs by requiring less water and maintenance. Other site elements maximize efficiency through creative strategies that allow for spaces to be used in multiple ways. For example, a seldom used drive is now a paved pedestrian/bicycle plaza that utilizes an adjacent park to also serve as an event/gathering space, and amphitheater seating for the Hilde Center was built out of the retaining walls at the back of the adjacent parking ramp.
