Urban Design Firm Hoisington Koegler Group to participate in September 21, 2007 National Park(ing) Day

Contact: Bruce Chamberlain, Vice President - (612) 252-7140

This Friday, September 21st, Hoisington Koegler Group (HKGi), a leading Minneapolis urban design firm (www.hkgi.com) along with other local landscape architecture and urban design firms will transform parallel parking stalls along First Avenue in the Minneapolis Warehouse District into mini, public greens. Between 11:00 and 2:00, we will plug a parking meter with quarters, bring in sod, trees and park furniture. Add a few kitschy design elements and voila, a 3-hour park is born. The event will draw attention to the fact that nearly 70% of most cities’ public space is dedicated to the private vehicle, while public space for people occupies only a fraction of the urban outdoors.

National PARK(ing) Day is a one-day event organized by the Trust for Public Land and the artist group ReBAR as a forum for designers, artists and advocates to come together and transform regular parking stalls into temporary public parks. The event calls attention to the importance that open space and green areas play in urban living and will emphasize the need to rethink the way we use public space.

Visit HKGi’s Park(ing) stall on First Avenue North in Minneapolis near Café Brenda as well as the other PARK(ing) stalls along First Avenue this Friday, September 21st.
