HKGi designed the Southwest Cambridge Master Plan for MetroPlains Development as part of a proposal to redevelop a former state hospital site near downtown Cambridge. The 80+-acre development, Heritage Greens, features single-family and multi-family residential units along with a senior housing campus. A central green and future community center will lie at the heart of the development. The single-family homes on the eastern edge of the project area will mesh with the adjacent traditional downtown neighborhoods by featuring traditional-style homes on small lots with garages in back served by alleys. The entire western half of the site integrates public green space and natural features with a landscaped north-south parkway, the central green, and a trail corridor connecting Heritage Greens to the Rum River and its existing trail network. The Minnesota Housing Finance Agency recently recognized this project with an award for excellence in design of affordable housing.
